My synopsis: For my home system the solution was to disable the integrated graphics and buy an off-board card void of Intel chips. The choices are numerous. V'oila! Digital output through DVI-D or HDMI works and the VGA cable can finally be put aside. When I encounter the problem in business environments I point them to this nightmarish thread and instruct them to do the same. It's not a fight worth fighting. Easier said than done, however, for businesses with several systems exhibiting the problem.
